Minister of Citizenship and Immigration 1963
The following letter was sent by Canada's Minister of Citizenship and Immigration to all of those who became Canadian Citizens in 1963.
The letter sets out the rights, privileges and obligations of Canadians - rights, privileges and obligations that are fully consistent with the principles set out on our website ourprinciples.ca.
Note particularly the second and third paragraphs of the letter which describe a Canada that is committed to upholding the ancient rights and liberties of all persons as free individuals who live together in harmony.
That is the promise that all Canadians saw on this great land - and it is the promise that led so many new Canadians to come to a country that was founded on ideals that would ensure that those values, freedoms, rights and privileges were kept secure for all Canadians by a truly democratic system of government and by institutions that were committed to ensuring them for all time.
Those ancient liberties alluded to in that letter are more fully outlined in Our Principles - The Rights of All Persons and The Duties of Government.
Now is the time to re-assert and restore those ancient ideals, rights and liberties - and to have our governments live by them.
