Duty of our Public Officials
Governments must protect and serve, not impose. They have been established to protect the rights of every person in a transparent and accountable manner. As a result, public officials must:
- recognize and respect the rights and just interests of all persons
- place their duty to protect the rights of members of the public ahead of their own interests
- act in an open, honourable, virtuous and ethical manner

Commitment made to new Canadian Citizens in 1963

The following letter was sent by Canada’s Minister of Citizenship and Immigration to all of those
who became Canadian Citizens in 1963. The letter sets out the rights, privileges, and obligations
of Canadians –
